'Fin-ished

ESPN.com's Pat Forde takes college coaching to school:

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -- With Nick Saban en route to a coronation in Tuscaloosa, it's officially time to change the vocabulary used to describe college coaches.

"Integrity" is out. "Character" is out. "Teacher" is out. "Leader of men" is out.

"Liar" is in.

They're not going to tell the truth to us, but we can tell the truth about them. It's this: They'll say anything to get recruits on campus, and they'll say anything to get media members off their backs when angling for a different job. And the panting attempts by school administrators, fans, other coaches and many media members to portray them as men of superior moral fiber needs to stop.

Although Saban undoubtedly believes what I do--that his employment is the business of Dolphins owner Wayne Huzienga and himself--it's clear from Saban's comments that his khakis caught fire weeks ago, and the time since then has been an amusingly and disasterously hypocritical attempt to hide the smoke.

In any event, Forde's a fine writer.

Here's my thing with the coaching carousels, the players in both leagues, college and pro, don't have the same rights. In college, players are required to sit out a year before playing for a different team, coaches aren't. If a coach recruits a player, and then splits, for the most part, the players are screwed. Also, a coach can split for the pros at any time, players can't. In the pros, a coach can quit anytime to take a better offer, players can't, but players can have their contracts terminated at any point, only being owed the signing bonus, but coaches, if terminated, get paid for the entirety of their contract. Which is why I've said in the past that the NFLPA is a terrible union.

Why you ask, do the coaches have more power than players (beyond the really bad union)? Competition. The league has a anti-trust exemption and no real competition for players. Coaches can bounce from college to pro and play the two off against each other. Thus Saban can demand big bucks and leave LSU for Miami, and then demand big buck from Alabama to leave Miami, never once having to worry about free agency or contracts. He's free to maximize value at any point he wants, and can dodge the black mark of getting fired by the Fins at the end of next year.

Finally, if I was an owner, I wouldn't hire a college coach. They're not prepared for the rigors of modern NFL coaching, and the lure of college is too strong, with too much competition fir their services. Hire a coordinator, they know the deal, and they want the pro game.

Coaches, and head coaches, to be exact, have more opportunities for employment throughout the leagues, and unquestionably more power than college players, but look at Art Shell, Jim Mora, Tom Coughlin, even Parcells: when "their" star players get the ear of ownership, between-the-lines talent talks and the coaches, sooner or later, will walk or be shown the door. A few, like Parcells, can step into another top job pretty much whenever or wherever; the rest, like the Mariuccis, Callahans, and McGinnesses before them, will come crawling to upstart networks, down-bound college gigs, or back to the pro coordinator ranks from which they came.

Coaches, win or lose, can't bounce between the leagues indefinitely when they leave of their own accord. It's why Carroll can get another pro shot and Saban or Spurrier likely never will.

Never say never. Carroll was D-O-N-E done as a pro coach, but now with a some seasoning under his belt, he may be back (but I doubt it, winning college coach of a big program is one of the great gigs in life, talk about owning a town). Like Rick Pitino before him, college coach, bombed as coach of Nicks, college coach, bombed as coach of Cetics, college coach. Like all celebrity, longevity gives you credibility. Of the guys you named, their undoing was lousy records, and owners unwilling to give a coach more than two years to turn around a moribund team, but if any are coming back I give it to Mooch, if he can wash the stink of Detroit off him (reputatioinally and physically. Ka-BOOM!)

As far as players killing coaches for every Jordan/Collins, there's a Nelson/Webber. Again, like celebrity everywhere, whoever has the most at the time has the power (a wishy-washy owner helps too).
